The State of Illinois will automatically exempt individuals from electronically filing documents for the following reasons:

In addition, you may complete a Certification for Exemption from E-Filing form if you do not have an attorney and at least one of the following applies:

  • You are representing yourself and do not have the Internet or a computer at home. Your only access is through a public terminal at a courthouse, library, or other location. This poses a financial or other hardship
  • You are representing yourself and have trouble reading, writing, or speaking in English
  • You are filing a document in a sensitive case, such as a petition for an order of protection or a civil no-contact/stalking order
  • You tried to e-file your papers, but you were not able to complete the process because the equipment or help you needed was not available.
